Wound Care

Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine

The St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine -
a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds.

Statistics show a tremendous need for wound care treatment. Each year, approximately six million Americans will suffer from problem wounds resulting from diabetes, circulatory problems and many other conditions – with 1.1 - 1.8 million new cases each year. Compelling statistics include:

  • 26 million Americans have diabetes
  • 26.9 percent of people over 60 have diabetes
  • 15 percent of all diabetics will develop problem wounds

Patients with diabetes have a 15 percent increase in the risk of amputation and approximately 82,000
diabetics will undergo amputation each year. But there is hope with St. Joe’s Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Therapy is a treatment in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen while inside a treatment chamber. The increase in oxygen in the blood encourages the creation of blood vessels and increases the production of collagen, the body’s natural ‘scaffolding’ - both necessary for wound healing. HBO can be the primary treatment or it can be used in combination with other treatments.
