Personalized Treatment Plans Developed by Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards
Breast cancer patients are faced with exceptional treatment challenges. To address these challenges and provide the best possible care, SJMO holds weekly breast cancer tumor boards that bring together the expertise and unique perspective of a group of practitioners from a variety of treatment disciplines.
Made up of specialists from such areas as radiology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, hematology, surgery, pain management and other disciplines, the breast cancer tumor board evaluates every aspect of a patient's medical history, clinical findings, diagnostic studies, therapy data and research data to make personalized treatment recommendations. The recommendations are submitted to each physician involved in the patient's care.
The goal of the breast cancer tumor conference is to provide the most beneficial options and recommendations for each patient's treatment.Tumor boards make it possible for physicians from a variety of disciplines to learn from each other. As a result, both patient and physician gain from the sharing of this information.Ultimately, tumor conferences increase the quality and effectiveness of treatment-and the promise for cure.
Clinical trials are an important part of cancer research.Clinical trials are research studies in which individuals join with physicians to find new, more effective ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. There are national trials available at SJMO for all stages of breast cancer. We offer prevention trials, early detection trials, treatment trials and quality of life studies.Participating in clinical trials ensures state-of-the-art cancer treatment. The physicians involved in cancer care at SJMO are active in these trials.Offering clinical trials at SJMO means that patients may receive the latest in treatment options while remaining at home, in their own community. For information on clinical trials available at SJMO through its membership in the Michigan Cancer Research Consortium, please go to http://www.mcrconline.org/.
