Faith-Based Community Nursing
The Faith Community supports you
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) works with numerous churches and houses
of worship in the area to address their parishioners’ health care needs and to provide
the appropriate health care assistance and linkages to the faith community.
Faith-Based Community Nursing is staffed by licensed professional nurses. The nurses seek to identify causes of illness and to foster physical and spiritual health and healing within the patient’s environment and with the patient’s relationship with God.
The Faith Community nurses serve in various roles:
- As educators
- Provides health information and health assessment.
- Teaches people to take care of their physical, emotional and spiritual well being.
- Trains people to attend to the needs of others.
- As ministers
- Provide assistance for both individual and family problems.
- Serves as an extension of God’s love and spiritual well-being.
- As health counselors
- Provides advice on previously recognized or potential health problems.
- Aids in the securing of additional help or assistance
- Provide knowledgeable referral to community resources.
- As an organizers
- Assist in identifying the congregation’s health needs.
- Plans and implements actions in addressing those needs through the use of the congregation’s and the community’s resources
The Faith Community (Parish) Nursing at SJMO proudly participates in a national documentation benchmarking grant to facilitate the use of faith community nurses to improve the health of seniors by identifying long term health care conditions and demonstrating positive outcomes.
