Mercy Cancer Care
Providing community-based, state-of-the-art treatment
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) has been a full-service cancer center since 1990 when the Michigan Institute for Radiation Oncology (MIRO) was established on campus. Recognition came in 1997 when the cancer program was first surveyed by the American College of Surgeons. At that time, SJMO received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons as a "Teaching Hospital Cancer Program," a category shared with much larger institutions in Southeastern Michigan. Only 39 comprehensive cancer centers in the United States exceed the requirements of Teaching Hospital Programs.
The cancer committee oversees all initiatives and every aspect of the St. Joseph Mercy Oakland cancer program. Members of the cancer committee include physicians from the departments of medicine, surgery, radiology, radiation oncology, pathology, physical medicine/rehabilitation and gynecology, as well as staff from pharmacy, nursing staff representing various areas of cancer care and education, and a certified cancer registrar.
Faithful adherence to the American College of Surgeons requirements ensures that our patients will have access to the following services:
- Comprehensive care, including state-of-the-art services and equipment.
- A multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options.
- Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options.
- Access to cancer-related information, education and support.
- Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.
- A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results.
- Quality care close to home.
