St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) is a member of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, which is committed to improving the health of older adults in all phases of their lives.
SJMO's team of skilled and compassionate physicians, nurses, case managers, pharmacists, rehabilitation specialists and other supportive staff recognize and address the unique physical, emotional and social changes that occur during aging. We offer a variety of unique programs to keep both mind and body fit, along with treatment for simple to complex health issues.
As a member of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, SJMO was among the first hospitals in Michigan to create a specialized senior emergency department exclusively dedicated to meeting the needs of seniors, generally age 65 and up. Our Senior ER focuses on the cultural and medical skills required to care for the body, mind and spirit, providing an experience worthy of the dignity and respect seniors deserve. We are the most experienced in providing senior ER care.
Staffed by specially trained geriatric (senior) emergency care providers, each Senior ER caregiver focuses on care that considers all aspects of a seniors' disease, illness or injury in an environment that optimizes comfort and safety.
SJMO joins its sister regional hospitals to achieve national recognition for the care we provide seniors through Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE). Our NICHE designation demonstrates commitment and continued progress in improving quality, enhancing the patient and family experience and supporting the hospital's efforts to serve our community.
Mercy Home Care and Hospice is a leader in providing home health and hospice care to patients in our community. The Mercy Home Care team of experienced professionals deliver a wide range of services using skilled nursing; home health aides; physical, occupational and speech therapy; social work, and nutritional consults to help seniors achieve needed recovery or healing from a medical situation or help seniors address health and lifestyle changes related to new or existing chronic disease diagnosis.

Also offered is the Guardian Angel Lockbox, an outside, secure storage box for keys that provides easy access to emergency responders so that they do not have to break down the door to get into the house.

SJMO occasionally partners with the AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired People) to offer the AARP Driver Safety Program. The program is designed especially for drivers age 50 and over. Participants learn how to deal with the effects of aging on driving, identify most common crash situations that seniors face, reduce the chance of a crash, update knowledge of today’s roads and identify when driving may no longer be safe. Those who attend the two-session course receive a certificate of completion and may qualify for a discounted insurance rate (depending on the company, participants are encouraged to talk to their insurance representative). There is a nominal cost to attend the program, with a discounted rate to AARP members.
SJMO sponsors free Senior Fit program at 10 sites throughout Oakland County from September through May. Geared for adults age 55 and up, Senior Fit is aimed at improving stamina, lowering blood pressure and decreasing the risk of osteoporosis among senior adults through regular exercise. The program uses chair and floor exercises that build strength and flexibility, help maintain strong bones, control body fat, reduce stress and improve an individual’s sense of well-being. Participants may attend one-hour exercise programs up to three times each week. The program requires registration, which is accepted every summer for the upcoming session.
Senior Fit sessions are offered in the following cities (each location has limited availability):
Several times each year, SJMO offers free screening and educational programs of interest to seniors.
St. Joe's also offers monthly educational lectures for the Great Lakes Crossing Outlets mall walkers and education programs throughout the year, such as a special presentation each October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
