The Research Center at SJMO

The Research Center at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) is a thriving, integral part of St. Joseph Mercy’s commitment to excellence in health care. The research office is currently involved in numerous large multicenter protocols. Areas of research at SJMO include oncology, treatment of coronary heart disease and heart attacks, and surgical procedure techniques.

SJMO is the administrative site for prospective investigation of pulmonary embolism diagnosis (PIOPED II), funded through the National Institutes of Health. This NIH grant is a multicentered investigation in which SJMO collaborates with Henry Ford Hospital, Cornell University, Harvard University, Duke University, Emory University, the University of Michigan and many others in determining the extent to which a minimally invasive Spiral CT scan can diagnose pulmonary embolism, thereby eliminating or reducing the need for angiography.

The clinical research at SJMO offers the opportunity for many people to participate in cutting-edge research that otherwise would not be available to them, including access to new therapies and diagnostics.
