Message from the transitional
year program director
Welcome to the transitional year information page
at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO). The program is fully accredited by
the Accreditation Counsel for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The
objective of the transitional year is to provide a well balanced program
of graduate medical education in multiple clinical disciplines designed
to facilitate the choice of and preparation for a specific specialty.
The transitional year is not meant to be a complete graduate education
program in preparation for the practice of medicine. The transitional
year is designed to fulfill the educational needs of medical school graduates
who require a prerequisite year of fundamental clinical education
in preparation for future medical endeavors.
The internal medicine and surgical residency programs at SJMO sponsor the transitional year. The transitional year education committee is responsible for administrating the transitional year program and has representation by a transitional year resident.
The transitional year faculty represents individuals from all fields of medicine including surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine and all available subspecialties. The program evaluates its residents in the six general competencies of: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.
Program structure
The duration of the transitional year program is
one year (12 months). At least 24 weeks must be completed in a discipline
that offers fundamental clinical skills, that is, emergency medicine,
family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics,
or surgery. All rotations are a minimum of four weeks. Each resident
must have no fewer than eight weeks of electives with a maximum eight
weeks designated for nonclinical patient care. All transitional year
residents will have at least a four-week (minimum 140 hours) rotation
in emergency medicine and at least 140 hours of documented experience
in ambulatory care. Below is a typical rotation block diagram for the transitional

Academic conferences
All disciplines participating in the transitional
year provide planned educational experiences for residents including:
morbidity and mortality conferences, journal review, seminars, grand rounds
and specialty presentations.

Application Requirements
- Applicants must pass USMLE Step 1 & 2 on first attempt
- Graduation from medical school within 5 years and clinical experience over the past 2 years
- Three letters of reference from a US, Canadian or British equivalent clinical rotation. Personal references are not acceptable in place of clinical references.
- Dean's letter and full transcripts from medical school
- ECFMG certificate if applicable
- Accept Citizenship, Green Card, Permanent Resident, EAD, J1's only
- Applications through ERAS only
