Diabetes self-management training program

The St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) diabetes self-management training program provides diabetes education and support for diabetic patients and their families. This program was one of the first to be implemented in the area and is certified by the state of Michigan and by the American Diabetes Association. With over 25 years in existence, the program is staffed by registered nurses and dietitians; some are certified diabetes educators.

SJMO’s diabetes program is unique in that its activities go beyond the hospital’s four walls, focusing on prevention, health screening and health maintenance. Besides the diabetes classes, St. Joseph Mercy Oakland also conducts screenings in the community, including at churches, for those who are at risk for diabetes. The hospital is also collaborating with other associations in raising awareness of diabetes in the community.

Our support group is free of charge and held in the lobby of the Alice Gustafson Center September through June, on every third Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Please call 248-858-3020 for more information on St. Joseph Mercy Oakland’s diabetes program.
