Hospital Rotations

Hospital Rotations in the GPR Program

The dental residents in the GPR program will rotate through six different areas of the hospital during their year of training. The six areas are :

  • Anesthesia
  • General Pathology
  • Surgery
  • Internal Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Emergency Department

The common thread among all of these experiences is that the resident is totally involved in that service during the time they are assigned there. The time commitment may vary, and there could be overnight call in these services. The dental residents will participate in any conferences, rounds, or meetings while on that service.

Emergency Department Call

Each resident will have the responsibility of covering the Emergency Department (ED) for one third of their resident year. Gathering diagnostic information, and where appropriate, treating dental trauma is an important part of the resident curriculum. When on-call, the resident should be able to be at the hospital within 20 minutes to urgent patient needs, such as avulsed teeth.

In the Emergency Department, the resident will work closely with the ED staff, and have the benefit of the dentists and oral surgeons on-call to consult or assist in treatment.
