St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Achieves 'Triple Crown'
of Breast Care Accreditations
Hospital's Comprehensive Breast Center Is First in Southeast Michigan and Second Mercy Cancer Network Hospital in Michigan to Mark Achievement
Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland's (SJMO) Comprehensive Breast Center (CBC) is the first in southeast Michigan—and the second Mercy Cancer Network (MCN) hospital in the state—to achieve the "Triple Crown" of breast care accreditations.
In December, SJMO's CBC was recognized as a Certified Quality Breast Center in the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program™ (NQMBC). This distinguished honor represents a commitment to provide the highest level of quality breast health care to patients in their community.
According to the NQMBC, "measuring and comparing quality performance is essential in assessing patient care and allocating resources where improvement is desired. In today's dynamic health care industry, breast centers are faced with providing quality care while simultaneously keeping costs under control. A center's staff must not only be familiar with existing standards of care, but must also be aware of new advances in technology. SJMO's CBC has taken a major step to ensure they provide the best possible quality care to breast patients in their community."
SJMO's CBC also was recently granted a three-year, full re-accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). NAPBC-accredited centers maintain a full range of medical services, along with a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care, ensuring the provision of continuity of care for women with diseases of the breast. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. SJMO first achieved NAPBC accreditation in 2010, and was one of the first in the state and the first in Trinity Health to achieve this status.
Additionally, SJMO's Breast Imaging Center was one of the first in the state of Michigan to receive American College of Radiology (ACR) recognition as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) in 2007. The BICOE designation confirms that SJMO has achieved excellence in high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
NAPBC, NQMBC and BICOE recognition comprises the "Triple Crown" of breast care accreditations.
"We are very proud of our 'triple crown' achievement" says Amy M. Kirby, MD, an SJMO surgeon and Medical Director, Breast Services. "Patients can rest assured that their breast imaging is done using the latest technology on the best equipment available. Our mammography technicians are experienced and highly qualified. And all breast imaging is read by an expert, dedicated breast radiologist. "
