New St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Cardiac Care Unit To Benefit From Fall Spectacular

Hospital’s Premier Fund-Raising Event to Feature Former U of M Head Football Coach Lloyd Carr as Celebrity Speaker

Pontiac, Mich.— St. Joseph Mercy Oakland’s (SJMO) new Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) will receive the proceeds of this year’s SJMO Fall Spectacular fund-raiser.

The annual benefit will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at The Townsend Hotel, 100 Townsend St., Birmingham.

The new CCU will be located in the South Patient Tower presently under construction.  The CCU will provide the most up-to-date technology care for patients recovering from a heart-related illness or injury.  The 32-bed unit will feature smart room technology to enhance patient safety, natural lighting to enhance healing, a welcoming and comfortable area for family and visitors and a quiet reflection room for patients and guests.  The unit will house 12 private CCU rooms and 20 private step-down rooms that can be converted to CCU rooms as needed. 

Other amenities in the new tower include:

  • Dedicated transport elevators
  • Dedicated equipment and utility elevators
  • Team collaboration workspaces
  • De-centralized nursing model utilizing patient charting alcoves at each patient room entry
  • Family waiting areas
  • Artwork in every patient room, public space and waiting area

Lloyd Carr, former University of Michigan head football coach, will be the speaker at the fund-raiser.  Carr’s teams won or shared five Big Ten titles and the 1997 national championship during his 13-year head-coaching career at Michigan.  He was recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Daniel and Kim Nye and Chris and Tracee Chelios are the honorary co-chairs for the event. 

Dr. Harold and Lynne Portnoy will receive the hospital’s Mercy Legacy Award at the event.  The award is presented to individuals who support the SJMO mission and charitable causes and volunteer their time in the community. Dr. Portnoy is a retired board-certified neurosurgeon with extensive experience in both adult and pediatric neurosurgery.  He was Chief of Staff from 2004 to 2005 and currently is a member of the hospital’s Foundation Board.  Lynne Portnoy is a former pediatric nurse at SJMO and has been instrumental in the success of the Fall Spectacular event since its inception. 

Guy Gordon of WDIV-TV Local 4 will return as the celebrity master of ceremonies.

Barton Malow is the presenting sponsor for the event. Other sponsors include CAVA; DGE Inc.; Giarmarco, Mullins and Horton, PC; Greenfield Health Systems, and Sodexo.
