St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator Achieves National Certification

Bloomfield Hills Resident Andrea Briefs-Ferris Named Certified Breast Patient Program Navigator

Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) announces that Andrea Briefs-Ferris, RN, MHSA, CBPN-IC, has achieved the designation of Certified Breast Patient Program Navigator with both Imaging and Cancer certifications from the National Consortium of Breast Centers (NCBC). Briefs-Ferris is a Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator at SJMO. She joined the SJMO staff in 2008.

Briefs-Ferris recently completed the NCBC’s Breast Patient Navigator Certification Program and underwent and passed four hours of testing. This certification program validates Briefs-Ferris’ knowledge and skills in navigating breast patients through their breast care/cancer continuum of care and demonstrates her personal and professional commitment to providing quality care for her patients.

Briefs-Ferris received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and her Master of Health Service Administration degree from the University of Michigan.

Prior to her nurse navigator role, she was a case manager in Pain and Palliative Care Service at SJMO. Previous positions have included home care coordinator for Mercy Home Care; palliative care nurse at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Md.; patient care coordinator at Kaiser Permanente in Rockville, Md., and senior home care coordinator with VNA of MedStar Health in Calverton, Md.

Certified Breast Patient Program status is valid for a lifetime with annual renewals. According to the NCBC, certification shows patients that the nurse navigator is a professional whose skills have been validated through advanced education and testing.

During the breast imaging navigation stages, the Breast Patient Navigator guides the patient through the breast imaging process and ensures the patient receives timely exam results, is scheduled for appropriate follow-up care or scheduled for their next routine imaging exam. During breast cancer navigation, the Breast Patient Navigator guides patients with a suspicious breast abnormality through and around barriers in complex cancer care systems to help ensure timely diagnosis and treatment. Briefs-Ferris also facilitates the Breast Cancer Support Group and the Look Good, Feel Better classes (the latter in association with the American Cancer Society) that meet at SJMO.

The NCBC promotes excellence in breast health care through a network of diverse professionals dedicated to the active exchange of ideas and resources.

Briefs-Ferris is a resident of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
