St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Names Associate For Extraordinary Nursing National Honor
White Lake Township Resident Sonny Cruz, RN, Receives DAISY Award

Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) has named Sonny Cruz, RN, as the January 2012 recipient of the prestigious DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Cruz, who works in the Clinical Decision Unit, was recognized for his clinical skills, compassionate care, exemplary service and extraordinary commitment to patient-centered care.
“Sonny is an excellent nurse who always puts in 100 percent when caring for his patients,” said Ann McDonald-Upton, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer. “He is an asset to the hospital and his colleagues. This acknowledgement is the perfect recognition for his continued commitment to excellence in patient care.”
This award is given monthly to outstanding nurses in more than 100 hospitals across the United States. Each award recipient receives a DAISY Award signature lapel pin, a certificate of recognition and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch.”
The DAISY Award is a program of the DAISY Foundation. DAISY is an acronym that stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the Barnes family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura at age 33. The DAISY Foundation funds research to help fight diseases of the immune system and supports patients and their families.
Cruz has been an associate at SJMO since 1997 and resides in White Lake Township, Mich.
