Men Encouraged to Sign Up for One Education Session to Learn about the Disease and Benefits and Risks of Screening
Pontiac, Mich. - St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) still has places available for its free prostate cancer education sessions followed by screening opportunities Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in its Alice Gustafson Center on the hospital campus, 44405 Woodward Avenue, Pontiac.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer, other than skin cancer, found in American men. It also is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. One in six men will get prostate cancer in his lifetime. But there's hope. Early detection has been found to save lives.
The following SJMO urologists will provide education on prostate disease and the noted topics. Men should sign up for ONE topic. All speakers also will cover what is prostate cancer, who should be tested and when, what the screening involves and the risks and benefits of testing. Free screening will then follow. Available screening includes a digital rectal examination (DRE) by a urologist and a PSA blood test.
