Funds to Provide Scholarships for SHAPEDOWN Program to Prevent Childhood Obesity
Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) was awarded a $1,000 Brooksie Way Minigrant to provide scholarships for its SHAPEDOWN program to prevent childhood obesity.
The grant is administered under The Brooksie Way™, a program of County Your Steps (CYS), a non-profit organization that encourages children and adults to engage in more physical activity through fun activities. It is named in memory of Brooks Stuart Patterson, son of Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, chair of the minigrant program.
SHAPEDOWN is a 10-week program based on a holistic approach to weight management for children and teens ages 6-18. Unlike a diet, SHAPEDOWN supports a gradual adoption of a moderate and healthy food intake that provides essential nutrients and leads to weight loss. It also stresses overall fitness, including endurance, flexibility and strength. Key components of the program are family involvement and communication.
A team of licensed health professionals, including a social worker, nutritionist and exercise specialist co-lead each class.
For more information about the program, call SHAPEDOWN Coordinator Julie Esparsa, 248-858-2554.
