The Metabolic Nutrition and Weight Management Program at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (248-858-2475) is the most advanced nutrition and lifestyle education-centered medical program of its kind in Michigan. The program was designed by Tom Rifai, MD, a board certified internal medicine specialist who is also on the board of directors of the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists.
The St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Metabolic Nutrition and Weight Management Program is a powerful, evidence-based, non-surgical approach for those looking to control and manage their metabolic issues related to insulin resistance and being overweight. Over 50 hours of combined face-to-face nutrition, exercise, lifestyle education and clinical time is dedicated to each patient helping them make healthy, enjoyable changes in their relationships to food, movement, positive thinking and lifestyle change. The program is the ideal, science-based approach to optimal health and wellness.
Dr. Rifai had been recognized for his leadership in metabolic nutrition and weight management by Harvard Medical School and is their Lifestyle Medicine course director in "Nutrition and the Metabolic Syndrome", an online course for physicians seeking to learn how to help patients prevent type 2 diabetes.
The Metabolic Nutrition and Weight Management program provides a combination of individual clinical and group education and motivational meetings. The goal of the program is to provide you the best state-of-the-art care and lifestyle coaching to control or prevent type 2 diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, being overweight and related issues, including but not limited to, weight-related arthritis, fatty liver and sleep apnea. Through program coaching, Metabolic Nutrition and Weight Management patients have commonly seen remarkable reductions in medication requirements for metabolic medical problems as a result of lifestyle changes. During program participation, primary care and other doctors on a patients' care team are kept informed with detailed written communications and lab results.
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland's Metabolic Nutrition and Weight Management program professionals are fully dedicated to their patients' health and spiritual well-being. While the program does include protein rich "meal replacement" drinks (smoothies preferably blended with vegetables and whole fruit), the team prides itself on a full spectrum of food education ranging from science-based Mediterranean to DASH and Pritikin style to Vegan and Paleo, and how to apply the best and most scientific aspects of these approaches at restaurants, while traveling and grocery shopping. The most effective label reading approach is taught, and professional chef-led healthy gourmet cooking demonstrations are held multiple times per year.
All prospective new patients are asked to attend one of Dr. Rifai's introductory, informational program seminars. Please call 248-858-2475 for seminar times and location.
