Consumer survey gives St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Heart Institute five stars for patient safety
The 2004 Michigan Health and Safety Coalition (MH&SC), a national nonprofit organization representing employers, including many of Michigan's largest and most influential, awarded the Heart Institute five out of five stars in each of the following treatment areas:
- Open heart surgery
- Percutaneous coronary intervention (catheterization labs)
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm
- Carotid endarterectomy
The five-star scale was developed to indicate how closely hospitals follow the recommended activities portion of the patient safety guidelines. The MH&SC guidelines cover two major elements that have been shown to be related to patient safety and quality:
- Volume, or the number of each procedure the hospital has done.
- Treatment area activities.
This scale provides patients with one additional piece of information to help them make more informed decisions about receiving care for specific treatment areas.
