The St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) Cancer Program offers:
Dedicated Inpatient Unit

  • 30 large private rooms
  • RN care managers
  • Oncology (cancer) and chemotherapy certified nurses
  • Daily multidisciplinary rounds for each patient, which include nutrition, pharmacy and social work, along with the nursing staff and physicians

Outpatient Infusion Center
Provides treatment for adult hematology and oncology, gynecological oncology and pediatric hematology/oncology

  • Newly appointed large open room, plus two additional private treatment rooms
  • Personal televisions with Get Well Network entertainment video and education with access to the internet and the patient’s personal email
  • Oncology certified (OCN) and chemotherapy certified nurses
  • Strong emphasis on patient education and family involvement

Radiation Oncology Center (21st Century Oncology)

  • State-of-the-Art Tomotherapy treatment system
  • Low-dose (LDR) and high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy
  • Prostate seed implants
  • 3D conformal treatment planning and IMRT/IGRT
  • Fractionated frameless stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Whole body/total skin electron beam therapy
  • Planning system and real-time ultrasound verification system

  • Access to new approaches in cancer detection, prevention and treatment
  • Participation in symptom management and quality-of-life clinical trials
  • Access to National Cancer Institute (NCI)-sponsored clinical trials
  • All clinical trials are approved by an Institutional Review Board responsible for the protection of trial participants

Breast Health and Cancer Services

  • The only Comprehensive Breast Center in Oakland County offering MammoPlus®, RiskPlus™ and RapidResults®services
  • State-of-the-art stereotactic core biopsy and diagnostic imaging
  • A dedicated breast  cancer nurse navigator supports patients throughout the diagnostic process
  • Weekly multidisciplinary tumor board discusses every newly diagnosed patient
  • Genetic counseling and testing
  • Very active breast cancer support group
  • Provider of the BCCCP (Title XV) program, which includes free mammograms and Pap smears
  • Free “Pink Ribbon” mammogram program funded, in part, by the Pink Ribbon Trailblazers

  • Primary practice site for one of only 13 board-certified gynecologic oncologists (specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive organs) in Michigan
  • Regular multidisciplinary tumor boards bring a team of experts together to  review and discuss each patient’s medical condition and treatment options
  • Latest treatment options are available, including minimally invasive surgery (da Vinci and laparoscopy), fertility-sparing surgery, reconstructive surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Lung Cancer Services For more information about Lung Cancer Services

  • Pulmonology, medical oncology, thoracic surgery, radiation oncology, pathology and radiology are all represented at tumor board meetingstwice a month
  • Specialists including thoracic surgeons and radiation oncologists who are skilled and experienced in the latest cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment technology
  • Superdimension Navigational Bronchoscopy System, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) for minimally invasive detection, diagnosis and staging and da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery for lung cancer surgical resection
  • Lung cancer nurse navigator
  • Use of national standard of care guidelines and participation in quality outcomes benchmarking program

  • “One-stop shop”  for information and education on cancer topics, social support and counseling, complementary therapies and classes and access to cancer experts and community resources
  • Focus is on helping to improve the knowledge and quality of life of patients with cancer, along with addressing the physical, emotional and spiritual needs that are part of cancer treatment and survival

Certified Cancer Registry

  • Certified tumor registrars (CTRs)
  • Maintains database of more than 12,000 cases to aid in monitoring cancer trends and treatment
  • Participates in the National Cancer Data Base
  • Participates in an American Cancer Society and American College of Surgeons collaboration, which provides the public with information that pertains to our hospital cancer statistics
  • Coordinates breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecology, hematology and lung multidisciplinary tumor boards, as well as didactic lectures by local and nationally known speakers
