A different experience

The St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) experience is different from that of other hospitals and is what makes SJMO a market leader. That experience can be summarized in three words: leading, understanding, healing.

Leading

As a leader, SJMO:

  • is ranked in the top five percent of hospitals across the nation for clinical excellence
  • has earned itself a position among the top 100 cardiovascular programs in the United States
  • was Michigan’s first certified primary stroke center and is one of only two in the state today with this designation
  • has received national recognition for palliative care programs
  • is recognized as a center of excellence for women and children’s services,is a nationally recognized leader in joint care and a model for orthopedic programs across the country
  • is Northern Oakland Countys Hospital of Choice, as a member of Trinity Health, has received national recognition as being in the forefront of patient safety and quality and, by August of 2006, will transform the way care is delivered by uniting state-of-the-art computer information systems with best-in-class business processes to create a 21st century health care system for world-class patient care and safety.

Understanding

The heart of the hospital is the team of understanding nurses, physicians, administrative staff, volunteers and families. These people are here for one reason: the patients. Day in and day out, this dedicated team constantly strives to provide care and services that make a difference in the health and well-being of the communities and patients they serve such as: launching an Hispanic clinic for women’s health, creating a health care clinic for the working poor, reaching out through faith-based community nursing, adding a soothing fish tank to the atmosphere of the emergency center, placing a spare bed in a private room for a spouse to stay close by, or allowing an ailing patient to order his favorite milkshake from his hospital bed.

Healing

With our leading technology and understanding approach, we are scientifically and emotionally able to give the best quality of care in the region. As a faith-based organization, we never discriminate our services and continue to partner with our community to tackle challenges facing all of its people. We seek to heal with compassion every patient and family member that walks through our doors and, those who live and work in the community we serve. We measure our success in terms of whether we’ve healed the whole person—body, mind and spirit.
